Lighting controls and sensors provide automatic or manual control of lighting according to movement, ambient light, a defined schedule or the required brightness level. These solutions help adapt lighting operation to the way a space is used and reduce unnecessary operating time.

Automatic and manual lighting control solutions

Lighting control devices determine when luminaires are switched on, switched off or dimmed. Control may be manual through a dimmer or automatic through a motion, presence or ambient light sensor. Timers and programmable controllers can operate lighting at specified times or keep it active for a defined period.

Motion sensors are suitable for areas where lighting is required only when movement is detected, such as corridors, stairwells, storage rooms or spaces around buildings. Twilight sensors and photocells respond to ambient light levels and are commonly used to control outdoor, façade and site lighting. Dimmers adjust brightness when both the selected light source and control device support the same dimming method.

How to select a lighting control device

  • Control method — movement, presence, ambient light, a time programme or manual brightness adjustment.
  • Load type and power — compatibility with the connected luminaires and light sources must be verified.
  • Mounting method — products may be intended for ceiling, wall, distribution board or flush-mounted installation.
  • Sensor characteristics — consider the detection range, coverage angle, switch-off delay and sensitivity adjustment.
  • Operating environment — outdoor and damp locations require a device suitable for the relevant conditions.

Applications and compatibility

Lighting sensors and controllers are used in homes, offices, public buildings, warehouses, stairwells and outdoor areas. Before installation, check the wiring diagram, supply voltage, connected-load characteristics and manufacturer’s instructions. Compatibility is particularly important for dimmers and electronically controlled LED luminaires, as not every combination supports stable or complete brightness adjustment.
