Fuses for electrical circuit protection

Fuses protect electrical circuits, cables and equipment against overload and short-circuit current. When the current exceeds the fuse’s specified limit, its fusible element melts and interrupts the circuit, helping reduce the risk of damage to the electrical installation and connected equipment.

This category includes cylindrical fuse-links and NH fuse-links for various distribution, control and industrial electrical applications. When selecting a suitable fuse, consider its type and size, rated current, rated voltage, breaking capacity, operating characteristic and compatibility with the fuse holder or base. After operating, the fuse-link must be replaced with a product of the same utilization category and suitable electrical ratings.

Fuses for electrical circuit protection

A fuse is an overcurrent protective device containing an element that melts under specified conditions and interrupts the electrical circuit. It responds to excessive current and helps protect conductors, cables, distribution equipment and other electrical devices against damage caused by overload or short circuits. Unlike a circuit breaker, an operated fuse cannot be reset; the fuse-link must be replaced.

Main types of fuse-links

  • Cylindrical fuse-links are compact protective components installed in compatible fuse holders or switch disconnectors.
  • NH fuse-links are used to protect higher-power electrical circuits and distribution systems with suitable fuse bases or fuse-switch disconnectors.
  • Different utilization categories allow the protective characteristic to be matched to the circuit and load type.

How to select a suitable fuse

First check the fuse-link’s construction and dimensions to ensure that it fits the intended holder or base. Its rated current must be selected according to the protected conductors, connected load and protection coordination, while the rated voltage must be suitable for the electrical system.

The breaking capacity is also important because it indicates the prospective short-circuit current that the fuse can safely interrupt. The utilization category and time-current characteristic determine how the device responds to overload, short circuits and temporary current peaks. A replacement must not be chosen by physical size alone; all relevant electrical ratings must be compared. Fuse selection and replacement should comply with the electrical design, equipment requirements and safe working procedures.
