Functions and applications of magnetic starters
A magnetic starter controls an electric motor through a contactor and a control circuit. Pressing the start button energises the contactor coil, closing the main contacts and supplying power to the motor. A stop command interrupts the control circuit and switches the motor off. This arrangement allows a high-power circuit to be controlled using a relatively low control current.
Depending on its design, a starter may be installed in a protective enclosure and fitted with start and stop buttons. Some versions may incorporate a thermal overload relay that helps protect the motor against prolonged overload and the effects of phase loss. Magnetic starters are commonly used to control pumps, fans, compressors, machine tools, conveyors and other motor-driven equipment.
How to choose a magnetic motor starter
- Motor rated current and power – the contactor and overload protection must be suitable for the connected motor.
- Control voltage – the contactor coil voltage must match the available control circuit.
- Operating duty – consider the starting frequency, load characteristics and expected operating cycle.
- Protection functions – check whether an overload relay is included and whether its adjustment range matches the motor.
- Enclosure protection – dusty, damp or otherwise demanding locations require an appropriate degree of protection.
Before installation, confirm that the starter is compatible with the motor and power-supply characteristics. Installation and electrical connection should follow the applicable wiring requirements and the manufacturer’s instructions.
